What is a proximity sensor?

It goes without saying that smartphone is a telephone, but there are models with built-in proximity sensors for the purpose of detecting whether the receiver (smartphone) is near the ear when making a call.

Since the proximity sensor is literally "proximity", it seems that it is used for processing such as erasing the screen of the smartphone when detecting the object (ear, head) at a distance of several cm and starting the call.
